The Atlas of Caspian Sea Hydromorphology
Krasnovodsk, and Makhachkala studystations were selected as the water
level gauging posts of centennial Caspian Sea water level. In addition,
the centennial profiles were defined and eight centennial hydrological
stations were specified in the Caspian Sea.
Before the collapse of Soviet Union, every ten days the intended data
were gathered and the collection was published in a maritime calendar.
with theIn parallel above mentioned activities, the Geographical
Institute of Azerbaijan Soviet Scientific Academy (Caspian branch)
was established in Artem and Pirallahi islands in 1953. In that time,
this institute had scientific-research vessels. In the time interval
between 1960 and 1990, continual research was done in the Caspian
sea upon three research vessels named Baku Academisin, Mir Qasemov,
and Shirvani belonging to the Geographical Institute of Azerbaijan
Scientific Academy. These vessels used to measure the marine
parameters on the centennial profiles (Figure 1). The places in where
the climatology parameters were measured over the centennial
profiles using the research vessels are shown by dots in Figure 1.
In 1972, the Geographical Institute of Azerbaijan Scientific Academy
in association with the Oceanography Institute and the Atmospheric
Physics of Soviet Scientific Academy for the first time founded a
marine observatory in the middle part of Caspian Sea which was
active until 1955. In this marine observatory, other than standard
climatological observatory activities, some scientific activities related
to the sea-atmosphere interaction, the internal and surface wave
turbulence, etc. were also done. As the result of marine explorations
done by the above mentioned research and study organizations, a
