These characteristics determine how a person responds to environmental factors and disease. TCM practitioners believe that an individual's constitution can predispose them to certain diseases, including diabetes. For instance, a person with a yin-deficient constitution may be more susceptible to developing diabetes due to the body's inability to properly regulate fluids and maintain balance (Li et al., 2019; Bai et al., 2021). 3.2 The predisposition of different constitution types to diabetes Research has shown that certain TCM constitution types are more prone to developing diabetes. A meta-analysis of the association between diabetes mellitus and TCM constitution types found that individuals with yin-deficiency, phlegm-dampness, and qi-deficiency constitutions are at a higher risk of developing diabetes. Specifically, the study revealed that yin-deficiency and phlegm-dampness were the most common constitution types among diabetic patients, accounting for 18% and 17% of cases, respectively. The risk of diabetes in individuals with these constitutions was significantly higher compared to those with other constitution types (Bai et al., 2021).
