Rich in terpenes and aromatic compounds, Hangbaiju essential oil exhibits significant pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. The study reviews traditional essential oil extraction methods and introduces three innovative techniques: supercritical CO₂ extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and ultrasound-assisted extraction. These methods offer clear advantages in improving extraction efficiency, preserving essential oil composition, and reducing environmental impact. The medicinal potential of Hangbaiju essential oil is primarily reflected in the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases, dermatological conditions, respiratory illnesses, and neurodegenerative diseases. Its antibacterial and hepatoprotective properties further expand its application scope. However, ensuring its safety and efficacy requires more fundamental research and clinical trials. This study provides a technological pathway for the efficient extraction and medicinal development of Hangbaiju essential oil, highlighting its extensive potential in modern medicine. Keywords Hangbai Chrysanthemum essential oil; Extraction technology; Antioxidant; Anti-inflammatory; Medicinal applications 1 Introduction ‘Hangbaiju’, scientifically known as Chrysanthemum morifoliumRamat. cv. ‘Hangbaiju’, is a renowned variety of chrysanthemum widely cultivated in China. It originated in Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province. It is traditionally used in tea beverages and as a dietary supplement in traditional Chinese medicine due to its health benefits (Lyu et al., 2024; Yang et al., 2022). The flowers, known as Hangbaiju, are harvested at different periods, resulting in products like Taiju and Duoju, which are valued for their unique flavor profiles and clinical efficacy (Hao et al., 2021; Yang et al., 2022). Historically, Hangbai Chrysanthemum has been appreciated not only for its ornamental beauty but also for its medicinal properties, which have been recognized in Asian cultures for centuries (Zhang et al., 2020). Essential oils are concentrated hydrophobic liquids containing volatile chemical compounds from plants. They are extracted through various methods, including distillation and solvent extraction, and are known for their aromatic properties and potential therapeutic benefits. Essential oils are widely used in the food industry as natural preservatives due to their antimicrobial properties (Zhang et al., 2020). Additionally, they have applications in aromatherapy, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, where they are valued for their potential health benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects (Li and Zhou, 2024; Gao et al., 2024). This study will explore innovative extraction technologies for Hangbai Chrysanthemum essential oil and evaluate its potential applications in medicine. Traditional processing methods often result in the underutilization of its active components. New extraction technologies, such as ultrasound treatment and Soxhlet extraction, offer higher efficiency and better preservation of bioactive compounds. This study will examine these methods with the aim of highlighting the medicinal potential of Hangbai Chrysanthemum essential oil, particularly its antibacterial and hepatoprotective effects, to significantly enhance its application in modern medicine.
