Moreover, constitution identification has been shown to provide valuable insights into the prevention and management of chronic diseases. For example, a meta-analysis revealed that individuals with yin-deficiency and phlegm-dampness constitutions have a higher risk of developing diabetes, suggesting that targeted interventions for these constitution types could mitigate disease risk (Bai et al., 2021). Similarly, the correlation between specific constitution types and diseases such as hypertension, stroke, and coronary atherosclerotic heart disease underscores the importance of constitution-based preventive strategies (Liang et al.,2020). 3 Research Progress in Modern Personalized Dietary Therapy 3.1 Personalized diet design based on nutrition Developing personalized dietary plans by combining nutritional needs with health status is a growing field that aims to optimize individual health outcomes. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a unique perspective on personalized nutrition, emphasizing the importance of body constitution in dietary planning. For instance, TCM constitution-based dietary interventions have shown promise in managing cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension. A randomized trial demonstrated that TCM constitution-based dietary regimes could achieve favorable clinical outcomes compared to usual care among grade 1 hypertensive patients (Wang et al., 2023). This approach involves assessing physical signs, personality, body symptoms, and susceptibility to environmental changes to tailor dietary recommendations, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of dietary interventions. Moreover, integrating TCM nutrition with modern nutritional principles can provide a holistic approach to diet design. TCM nutrition focuses on achieving balance and harmony within the body through food, considering the spleen-stomach as the "root" of post-heaven and the homology of medicine and food. This ancient discipline, when combined with modern nutritional science, can address individual nutritional needs more comprehensively. The integration of TCM nutrition into modern dietary practices requires higher specialist training for dietitians and the development of age-specific nutrition principles to fully demonstrate its advantages (Zhao et al., 2020). 3.2 Genetic testing and personalized nutritional interventions The advent of genomics and metabolomics has revolutionized personalized nutritional interventions, allowing for more precise dietary recommendations based on an individual's genetic makeup (Wang, 2024). Systems biology technologies have enabled the personalization of TCM, facilitating the provision of the right care to the right patient at the right time (Wang et al., 2012). By analyzing genetic and metabolic profiles, healthcare providers can develop nutritional plans that cater to the unique needs of each individual, potentially improving health outcomes and preventing diseases. Incorporating genetic testing into TCM practices can enhance the precision of dietary interventions. For example, the TCM constitution theory, which studies the holistic body condition influenced by inborn and acquired factors, can be complemented by genetic data to provide a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's health status. This integration can lead to more effective health management and disease prevention strategies, as different constitution types predispose individuals to various disease susceptibilities (Li et al., 2019). 3.3 Diet therapy strategies for disease prevention Personalized dietary plans play a crucial role in chronic disease prevention and health management. TCM-based dietary interventions have been shown to be effective in managing cardiovascular diseases by controlling oxidative stress, a major contributor to these conditions (Jiang et al., 2022). The use of antioxidant-rich TCM components in dietary plans can help mitigate oxidative stress, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases (Figure 1).
