International Journal of Clinical Case Reports 2024, Vol.14, No.6, 312-326 http://medscipublisher.com/index.php/ijccr grape seed oil (Zhang et al., 2015). The high levels of these compounds in X. sorbifolia oil make it a potent antioxidant source. Xanthoceras sorbifolia oil exhibits remarkable antioxidant properties due to its rich composition of unsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols, and phenolic compounds. Its antioxidant capacity is comparable to, and in some aspects superior to, other vegetable oils, making it a promising candidate for various applications in health, nutrition, and industry. The oil's unique composition not only provides antioxidative benefits but also offers additional health advantages, such as neuroprotection and immune modulation. 5 Applications of Xanthoceras SorbifoliaOil in Cardiovascular Protection 5.1 Relationship between cardiovascular disease and oxidative stress Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of mortality worldwide, and oxidative stress is a significant contributing factor. Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body's ability to detoxify these reactive intermediates or repair the resulting damage. This imbalance leads to endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and lipid peroxidation, which are critical in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular conditions (Zhang et al., 2010; Zheng et al., 2022). The antioxidant properties of various natural compounds have been extensively studied for their potential to mitigate oxidative stress and, consequently, reduce the risk of CVDs. 5.2 Mechanisms of Xanthoceras Sorbifolia oil in cardiovascular health Xanthoceras sorbifolia oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic acid and nervonic acid, which are known for their beneficial effects on cardiovascular health (Zheng et al., 2022). The abundant monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in Xanthoceras sorbifolia oil help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels while maintaining or increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, thereby improving overall lipid profile (Chen et al., 2021; Zheng et al., 2022). Additionally, Xanthoceras sorbifolia oil contains substantial amounts of tocopherols and sterols, which have strong antioxidant properties that neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduce oxidative stress, further protecting the cardiovascular system (Zheng et al., 2022). The phenolic compounds present in X. sorbifolia oil also contribute to its cardiovascular protective effects. These compounds exhibit strong antioxidant activities, as demonstrated by their ability to scavenge free radicals and protect against DNA damage (Zhao et al., 2018; Zhang et al., 2015). The anti-inflammatory properties of these phenolic compounds further enhance cardiovascular health by reducing inflammation, a key factor in the development of atherosclerosis (Zhao et al., 2018). 5.3 Animal model experiments: improving blood lipid profiles and preventing atherosclerosis Several studies have investigated the effects of X. sorbifolia oil on animal models, particularly focusing on its ability to improve blood lipid profiles and prevent atherosclerosis. In one study, the administration of X. sorbifolia oil to hyperlipidemic rats resulted in a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, while HDL cholesterol levels were increased (Mei et al., 2020; Chen et al. 2021). These changes in lipid profiles are indicative of a reduced risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. The antioxidant properties of X. sorbifolia oil have been shown to protect against lipid peroxidation, a process that contributes to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. The oil's ability to enhance the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase further supports its role in preventing oxidative damage to the cardiovascular system (Li et al., 2020; Zhang et al., 2020). 5.4 Potential clinical applications and supporting data The positive results from animal experiments provide an optimistic outlook for the clinical application of Xanthoceras sorbifolia oil in the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases.
