Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics, 2025, Vol.13, No.3, 145-153 http://medscipublisher.com/index.php/cge 147 Figure 1 A conceptual model of functions and influence factors of family involvement in advance care planning (Adopted from Ellis-Smith et al., 2023) The key to applying the family systems theory in cancer treatment lies in taking the entire family into account when formulating the care plan. Studies show that whether family members can offer help to patients in both life and psychology, and whether they are willing to participate and have confidence are very important for meeting the needs of patients and ensuring the smooth progress of nursing work (Ellis-Smith et al., 2023). This requires medical staff to have a better understanding of patients' family situations and provide better nursing services. 3.2 Chronic disease self-management theory: family support enhances compliance The theory of chronic disease self-management holds that if there are people around to help, especially family members involved, the patient's ability to manage the condition can be improved. After the patient is discharged from the hospital, it is particularly important for family members to supervise the patient to take medicine on time, observe their physical condition and adjust their living habits, which can help the patient take better care of themselves (Klinke et al., 2022). The method of involving family members in nursing can reduce the psychological pressure of patients, enhance their confidence in taking care of themselves, and also improve the ability of family members to care for patients (Ahn et al., 2020). In addition, the family-centered care model, such as training family members in care skills, can make patients more willing to cooperate with the treatment and also enable patients and their families to live better (Klinke et al., 2022). These research results indicate that integrating family support into patients' self-management methods can better meet the needs of cancer patients. 3.3 Social support theory: emotional and information support assistance for rehabilitation The social support theory holds that when a person is seriously ill, the emotional comfort, information assistance and practical support given by others are crucial for his recovery and happiness. During the process of cancer treatment, family members are the main source of support for patients. They can help patients relieve their pain, enable them to make decisions after clearly understanding the situation, and also help patients familiarize themselves with the medical treatment process (Kishino et al., 2022). The emotional comfort given by family members can reduce the loneliness and anxiety of patients, and the shared information can enable patients to have a better understanding of their own condition and treatment methods (Ferrell and Wittenberg, 2017; Dieperink et al., 2020).
