Even at different stages of the same root and stem, gene expression changes dynamically. Transcriptome analysis found that the expression of some gene modules in different developmental stages of sugarcane was inversely correlated with the fiber and sugar content of the stem: for example, a group of genes related to fiber accumulation was highly expressed in the later stage, while genes related to sugar accumulation were more active in the early stage (Figure 1). Figure 1 (a) Field trial of TALEN-mediated COMT mutants. (b) Field performance of COMT mutant lines and wild type (WT). CB6 and CB7 are mutant lines derived through direct embryogenesis and biolistic transformation.
