Rice Brown Planthopper
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka can be designated as South Asian Biotype.
Long Range Migration of South Asian Biotype of BPH appears to be aided
by Southwest monsoon of Indian subcontinent. Migration of East Asian BPH
Biotype is facilitated by The East Asian monsoon affecting large parts of Indo-
China, Philippines, China, Korea and Japan. Migration of South-East Asian
Biotype is probably aided by Indo-Australian monsoon.
Process of BPH long distance migration involves the mass movement of insects
to a height of thousands of meters and moving along the monsoon winds for
few hundreds up to 2000kilometers
Due to long distance BPH migration, insecticide resistance and development of
virulence to resistance genes in rice can be easily spread to the entire migration
area and can make Management of the insect more difficult.
