2.3 Effects of manuring on growth and yield characters of watermelon
In the rainy season, manure types had no significant (P=0.05) effect on the number of leaves and flowers per plant
produced respectively by watermelon (Table 4). However NPK fertilizer significantly enhanced vine length per
plant, number of vine branches per plant, number of flowers per plant, number of fruits per plant, number of
cracked fruit per plant, mean fruit length, mean fruit diameter, and mean fruit weight respectively. In the late
season, manorial type had no significant (P=0.05) effect on most growth and yield characters measured (Table 5).
However organomineral fertilizer enhanced (P=0.05) both the number of fruit rots per plant and cracked fruit per
plant, NPK fertilizer enhanced mean fruit diameter while the control treatment (unmanured) enhanced mean fruit
weight.
