lateral line; and soft dorsal fin rays 18 to 20 (21 to 23
in
T. africanus
). Fischer and Bianchi (1984) and
Randall (1995) mentioned that the maximum size for
T. bailonii
is 535 mm, while Daget and Smith-Vaniz
(1986) gave 600 mm as the maximum size. The range
of the total length obtained in the present study is far
larger than the ranges stated above. This range makes
the Iraqi specimens the record size for this species.
The blackmouth croaker,
Atrobucca nibe
is found in
the Indo-West Pacific region from Mozambique and
Natal, South Africa to India, China, Japan, Philippines,
Indonesia, and off northern Australia (Froese and
Pauly (2013). However, it has not been reported from
the north-western Indian Ocean and from the Omani
waters (Fischer and Bianchi, 1984, Froese and Pauly,
2013). Consequently, our record extends its range to
the north-western Indian Ocean, to the Arabian Gulf
waters of Iraq and considered a new record to this area.
Sasaki (2001) recorded 450 mm total length as the
maximum size. The total length range we recorded
exceeds the size given by Sasaki (2001).
